Bio - David R. Crane

Bio - David R. Crane

David began playing the piano at a very young age. He would often play for hours while visiting his Grandma's house. She would teach him simple songs, and finally convinced his parents to start him with formal lessons by age 7. He then started the cello at age 10.

Through his teenage years, David participated in the National Federation of Music Clubs and received superior ratings every year. During this time he had the opportunity to accompany his family and relatives as they played in church and other venues.

During high school, David decide to pursue his second instrument, the cello, more seriously. He served as principle cellist for the Jordan Symphony Orchestra for two years and as assistant principle cellist of the Bingham High Orchestra. David had the opportunity to solo on the cello with several orchestras, the highlight being the opportunity to perform part of the Lalo Cello Concerto in D minor in Cedar City at Southern Utah University. His orchestral work earned him a scholarship to the University of Utah, where he began his studies in cello performance. There he played with the Utah Philharmonia, University of Utah Symphony and participated in the chamber music program.

David has enjoyed working with children. During his first year in college he taught orchestra at Altaview Elementary and Jordan Ridge Elementary. He has also maintained a studio of private piano and cello students since he was 14.

He was hired by Imagination Place to teach Piano and to develop a young child music program for children aged 4 to 6. He developed the core curriculum for the Musical Bridge TM Program with the Owner of Imagination Place, Darlene Casanova. The program is still in use today.

David completed his Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from the University of Utah. He has studied cello with Stephen Emerson and Rob Marsden. He studied piano with Larry Gee and Jeffery Price, and Piano Pedagogy with Sue Parsons and Merla Little.

Piano & Cello Lessons

Piano & Cello Lessons
including Accompanying, Coaching and Transcription Services

Lessons are taught one on one. The length of the lesson is generally determined by your ability level. Beginners usually only need 30 minute lessons while intermediate and advanced students usually require an hour.

You are assigned a lesson time each week. Please see the Policy section for specifics on attendance, payment and discounts. If your not sure about the commitment of weekly lessons and you have had playing experience in the past, check out the section below on One time or Short Term lessons.

Piano Lessons - Generally, formal music lessons are suited best for children age 5 and above. Parents are always welcome to observe lessons. Younger children should still participate in one of many young child music programs around such as Music Together offered locally by Imagination Place. These programs help children learn basic music skills that will make lessons more enjoyable when they start. Most children do not have the attention span to sit through a full lesson until somewhere between ages 5-8.

Every child is different, so please feel free to discuss any concerns or questions with me. I often suggest that until about age 8 a parent observe lessons and then practice with their children each day. I always give practice instructions and have many resources available to help young children. I have experience teaching several different methods and try to find one that suites the learning style of each child.

Yes, even adults can start an instrument later in life, or pick back up an instrument long abandoned. The great thing about playing an instrument as an adult, is that it is for pure enjoyment. I focus on having fun and finding enjoyment in playing. I encourage adult students to select some of their own music so they can spend time playing things they enjoy.

I have several methods available for older beginners and adults that get them reading music and playing very quickly. So the older beginner should never feel like they are behind in anyway. A free consultation can be set up to discuss teaching methods and answer any questions you have.

Cello Lessons - I usually don't suggest cello lessons for children under age 9, but will teach them. I encourage children to learn piano first for a couple of years prior to starting cello as it puts them significantly ahead. Also, younger children often have a much harder time with the cello as it require more advanced motor skills and hand strength, both of which are gained through piano study.

One Time Lesson/Coaching - I have recently decided to offer, Hourly Coaching Sessions. These sessions are meant for people that have played before and not beginners. Beginners really need the consistency of a lesson each week. These sessions are specifically for students that want to work on a specific piece, or get help with specific techniques. They are a great option for people that are rather busy and really can't find the time each week for a lesson. You simply pay each time you come and schedule each session individually.

Accompanying - I offer coaching for almost any instrument and voice as well as chamber groups. I focus on performance techniques and musicality. I can travel anywhere for performance or rehearsal as well as having a rehearsal space in my studio.

Transcription - I can provide straight transcriptions of recording or chord chart as well as arranging music for any instrument you desire. Because the complexity can vary from simple melody lines to full multi-instrument arrangements, prices are quoted individually per project based on complexity and length. Turn around time is quick and a piano recording can be provided.

Lesson Policies

Lesson Policies

Payment

1. Lessons are charged at a flat monthly rate as outlined on the Pricing/Services page.

2. Payments are due no later than the 7th day of the month. Lessons will be discontinued after th 14th day of the month if payment is not received. Payment of the full months tuition will be required to start lessons again. Lessons cancelled due to non-payment cannot be made up.

2. The tuition entitles you to the equivalent of 4 weekly lessons during the month. (Please see the section on attendance for my make up lesson policy.)

Discounts

1. A prompt pay discount of $10 will be deducted from your payment if it received by the 7th of each month. If you will miss your first lesson of the month, you can mail your payment so it is received, not postmarked, by the 7th.

2. If you refer a student to the studio, you will receive a $30 credit toward your tuition. This is given as a $10 credit each month for the first 3 months the new student is with the studio. There is no limit and you receive it for every student you refer (i.e., if you refer a family of 2 students, you receive 2 referral credits).

3. Temporary discounts are periodically offered for new students and families as outlined in adds. It is the responsibility of the prospective student to make sure the discounts are given and brought to my attention.

Attendance

1. You will be charged for the whole month whether or not you attend each lesson.

2. A Leave of Absence may be requested ahead of time if you are going to miss a month or more of lessons. You are not charged during this time. I no longer will hold your time during the leave of absence. You will need to schedule a new time when you return. You are charged for any missed lessons prior to requesting a Leave of Absence.

3. Make-up lessons are not guaranteed, but offered based on availability. No make-up lesson will be given for “day of” cancellations. Make-up lessons will not be carried into the next month, nor will you receive credit for lessons that are not made up.

4. Credits will only be given when I am unable to provide the equivalent of 4 lessons in a given month.

Practicing

1. Each student is asked to practice 5-6 days per week for at least 30 minutes a day minimum. Adult students should strive to practice at least a few minutes everyday, even if limited on time.

2. Lack of practice is not considered a reason for missing lessons.

3. Many families like to take a break in the summer. However, taking the entire summer off is detrimental to a student’s progress.

Miscellaneous

1. Recitals will be held approximately once a year.

2. Each student is to practice all the material that he or she is assigned for the week. If a parent feels that the assignment needs to be modified, please call me first. I may have a pedagogical reason for what I have given them.
